INTERVENTIONS
We provide Interventions for families who have a loved one involved in the destructive cycle of alcohol and drug abuse. We utilize a 4 step method of working with the family, first to identify the needs of the addictive individual, then build on the family strengths to “confront” the addiction, and intervene to assist providing help and wholeness to the addicted individual. We base our work on the 12-step model of recovery, which has proven to be a life long tool in achieving wellness from addictions. Families can feel helpless, frustrated, lonely, hopeless and exhausted when a loved one is using drugs and alcohol.
A DEFENSE AGAINST PAIN
To “defend” against harm or perceived harm is a natural action. However, using alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, sex and codependency to “defend” against painful feelings will usually turn into an addiction. In our experience, these substances and behaviors distort reality, hamper daily functioning, interrupt and destroy relationships, and keep adolescents from developmentally achieving independence and learning life skills to use in the future.
Adults caught up in the addiction cycle destroy primary relationships, loose jobs and destroy child-parent relationships to the point of distinction. Common defenses against painful realities and those involved in the addiction cycle include DENIAL, ISOLATION, RATIONALIZATION, BLAMING, PROJECTION, MINIMIZING.
